summertime in the sea

via bluescholars.com
Last year, I attempted to do a mixtape/freeverse type song using the “Summertime in the LBC” instrumental. Miserable fail. Soon as I turned the mic on, I’d hear the original vocals over and over in my head. So I just started singing that instead, changing some of the lyrics along the way. Then I sent it to a few friends and forgot all about it. A year passed, and The Sun started making cameos again in our gray little city, along with requests to put out a mixed-down version of the song.
So here it is. Our tribute to summer in Seattle, and an homage to what I believe to be the finest summertime song of my generation. From my birthplace (LBC) to my nowplace (Seattle), to anywhere people of the sun gather to celebrate its presence.

back home
we were discharged from the hospital later than we thought, but no complaints. highline medical center exceeded our expectations and took excellent care of us. from the bigger than average birthing suite, to the knowledge of every nurse, to the room service… i’d recommend any future family there.
well here’s some pics over the last couple days, and a big thank you again to everyone who visited – made our stay go by real fast.

birth day
she’s here. she’s finally here. just writing a few words for now for those who stuck with us til the end and kept refreshing the site to hear the latest.
we’re both exhausted… amanda especially, of course. amanda nursed right away, which is super important because even though she isn’t producing milk yet, the little bit of clear liquid coming out of her breasts right now is liquid gold. it’s chock-full of disease fighting anti-bodies. but now Capri is in the nursery while they monitor her over night… so me and momma are gonna get the last bit of decent shut-eye while we can. goodnight from me and amanda. hello from Capri.

date of birth
6:28 AM – good morning. amanda had a rough night. the medication she’s on is making her feel very nauseous and hasn’t been able to sleep all night. i knocked out pretty easy, i feel helpless that i can’t help her out though.
story time. so our due date was july 27th, and yesterday was supposed to be just a normal check up. well our doc found too much protein in amanda’s urine test combined with high blood pressure and swelling. these combined make up a condition called preeclampsia. the only treatment for it is… delivery.
if it isn’t taken care of, preeclampsia turns into eclampsia… which is seizures during pregnancy that aren’t related to brain conditions. to counteract that, they use magnesium sulphate, which they get into her through these IV machines.

8:00 AM – our obgyn (gynaecologist) dr. schwab is with us now. said amanda’s cervix is right on track.
oh, and she mentioned we’re probably gonna have a baby today.
8:20 AM – dr. schwab inserted these two small inflatable balloons. one of the balloons is inside her uterus, the other is outside of her cervix. men, to get a clearer picture, look here. basically, the idea is to inflate both balloons so it flattens out the cervix and speeds up dilation. right now she’s at 2 cm. goal is to be at 10 cm to deliver.
8:52 AM – contractions are coming a little more frequent and a little more intense.
9:00 AM – epidural has been asked for!
9:24 AM – the black graph on the bottom are her contractions.

anesthesiologist preparing. this is her favorite guy of the moment :[

holy F. amanda took this needle like a champ! i'm SO proud of her already.

"i feel like a million bucks right now" zZzZzZzZzZzZzZ

2: 06 PM - SHE'S HERE!!!! just kidding. nothing much has changed since amanda (and i) knocked out. her family has been here visiting though.
2:21 PM - correction. apparently they added oxytocin into the IV stream. this stimulates more contractions.
5:10 PM - the balloons fell out... which means she's at about 5 cm. i have a feeling that it's going to snowball pretty soon. also, dr. schwab said she'll be here until 7 AM, which means she'll be here to deliver Capri :]
7:00 PM – roughly 24 hours at the hospital so far. amanda’s contractions have been getting more intense. she feels as if the epidural is wearing off but it’s a combination of baby moving further down and the rest of her body feeling new adjustments.

there’s already a dosage that’s slowly trickling into her system from her back, but when she wants to press this button, a little extra comes.

9:05 PM – i thought amanda fell asleep, which would have been amazing considering her contractions, but she was actually focused on breathing through the contractions and didn’t make a peep. amazing. while i thought she was napping, i left our cave for the first time and i found out there was a… snack room?!!

9:50 PM – lerrick, Capri’s godfather (and my bfffff), stopped by with flowers and balloons (normal ones). also brought me my favorite snacks to munch on. thanks babe.
also, amanda’s been having most of her pain on the left side and the anesthesiologist was puzzled. when dr. schwab came in earlier, she told us Capri was facing towards the left… maybe that’s why? :]
10:22 PM – amanda just told the nurse that she’s feeling pressure… like she should push. dr. schwab (next door) is on the way. cross your fingers.
10:29 PM – 8 cm. we’re on track for a midnight push. july 16th girlie :]
10:50 PM – contractions almost at their peak. will be posting less often for a while. gonna focus on keeping mama comfy.
11:29 PM – amandas mom is in the room giving her the comfort only a mothers touch can provide. Capri will know of this soon. I’m guessing within the next hour she’ll be pushing.
11:38 PM – she feels like she needs to push again!
hereeee weeee goooo
2:14 AM – 6 lbs 3.9 oz of goodness.
